Coachella 2005

26 October 2003

A guy is probably with the tip of his fingers hurt, cuz he's writing about 8 Cat Power gigs he went to. That's on Yahoo! Group "catpower".

25 October 2003

After so long not accessing it, I just noticed Arne's site is apparently off. Too bad.
Comes With A Smile #14 is arriving soon, and the great tracklist is available on the site as follows (interviews include most of these artists):

1.M Ward | Outta My Head (demo)
2.Rogue Wave | Be Kind + Remind (remix)
3.At Swim Two Birds | Darling (remix)
4.Granfaloon Bus | There’s A Sugar Museum (acoustic)
5.Electrelane | Long Dark (alt.)
6.Sigmatropic (featuring Edith Frost) | Haiku 4 (alt.)
7.Brokeback with Chicago Underground Duo | Chomsk, Live!
8.Death Cab for Cutie | Debate Exposes Doubt (acoustic)
9.Alasdair Roberts | Long A-Growing
10.James William Hindle | W11 3HN
11.The Essex Green | Victor
12.The Sadies | The Story’s Often Told (live)
13.Gordon Downie | Christmastime in Toronto (alt.)
14.Royal City | That My Head Were A Spring (w/strings)
15.Currituck Co. | Father’s Day
16.Diana Darby | Sunday It’s Clover
17.Doug Hoekstra | Because She Loves Him
18.The Twin Atlas | Moment Right Now
19.The Weakerthans | Psalm for the Elk’s Lodge Last Call (alt.)
20.Willard Grant Conspiracy | Dig A Hole

There's some kinda mistake there, cuz acording to Sigmatropic's website, "Haiku 4" features Alejandro Escovedo and "Haiku 8" features Edith Frost
Besides, they could've also included Sigmatropic's "Haiku Ten", oh well...

se nóis dois se empareasse
se juntim nóis dois vivesse
se juntim nóis dois morasse
se juntim de nóis dois drumisse
se juntim nóis dois morresse
se pru céu nóis assubisse
mais porém se acuntessesse
de saum pedro num abrisse
a porta do céu i fosse

e tu cum eu insistisse
pra q eu me arresolvesse
e a minha faca puxasse
e o buxo do ceu furasse
tarvez que nóis dois ficasse
tarvez que nois dois caísse
e o céu furado arriace
e as virge toda fugisse

it's a sell on ebay, but the pic is what interests.
Check it out.
As crazy as it may sound, The Onion A.V. Club only now decided to reviem Beth Gibbons & Rustin' Man's Out Of Season, a year after its release.

Elliot Smith dies at age 34

Sweet Adeline
Pitchfork

Never thought I'd report such sad news so soon.

21 October 2003

I believe many have read about it, but Cat Power's second European tour this year (to happen in otcober/november) was prety much cancelled. No More Italy and many other countries.
I think she'll still go to Paris, tho, it's a whole different thing there, the woman shows up there twice a year and it's sold out every bloody time.
Plus, she's only been there once this year, for what I recall.
Would two or three fellas who read this please tell me if they've seen any of these gigs, and if they recommend:

Beth Gibbons & Rustin' Man (I'm thinking thumbs up for this one)
Peaches (Shaking da thang, 'n stuff)
KD Lang
Super Furry Animals
White Stripes
Lambchop
Concrete Blonde

Thanks!

17 October 2003

Speaking of Haiku, I can't believe I didn't mention Fink's newest release, Haiku Ambulanz. I'm still very into Mondscheiner, tho.
I love them cuz since 1997 they release an album a year, except for 2000.

16 October 2003

OK, that's no news, but it's been kinda FAQ on Cat Power, so here it is:
"At the age of 16 she bought a Silvertone guitar for $75 because she had a crush on the guitarist of a band called the Flat Duo Jets, who played one."
Her current guitar is a Danelectro.

15 October 2003

Interview with Paul Westerberg on Onion A.V. Club
*there's also something on Belle And Sebastian, for whoever likes them*

14 October 2003

Pics from Cat Power's last Amsterdam gig, on June 15th.

12 October 2003

I found this site of a photographer who have lots of French gig pics of many artists I respect.
So off you go to Laurent Orseau's site
PJ Harvey is on Desert Session's "Desert Sessions, Vol. 9-10" (released Sep 23, 2003) and is credited for Bass, Vocals, Melodica, Pandeiro.
Didn't listen to it, but hey, it's PJ! And that could never be a bad thing, in any sense.

11 October 2003

Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter is in the mixing process of their new album, but there's no confirmed release date yet.

09 October 2003

.... and a new gallery update on AHC
The other thing I got to know is that Cat Power didn't win the Shorty, but some Damien Rice guy. There's a long report on the whole ceremony on VH1.com, but I'll paste what interests me:

The Streets opened the show with British rapper Mike Skinner rhyming over DJ tracks in between sipping on a bottle of champagne. The perpetual partier seemed a bit out of place in the early time slot, but the crowd danced along. Chan Marshall, a.k.a. Cat Power, looked a little uncomfortable as well, her issue being the size of the theater. The club veteran made things more comfortable, however, when she meandered out into the crowd as she sang old soul standards.
in case u don't know the connection, Cat Power covered a bunch of his songs, "Mama You Got A Daughter" is one of the latest.
Previously unreleased John Lee Hooker to be released

Zakiya Hooker, daughter of John Lee Hooker, who passed away in 2001 at age 83, finished the record he was recording by the time of his death.

Hooker had started to work on the album Face to Face with Zakiya and a bunch of one of a kind's such as Van Morrison, Johnny Winter, Elvin Bishop, George Thorogood e Johnnie Johnson.

Zakiya went on, bringing Dickey Betts, Warren Haynes, Jack Casady e Deacon Jones.

The track list:
"Dimples"
"Big Road"
"Serves Me Right To Suffer"
"Face To Face"
"Boogie Chillen'"
"Stop Jivin' Me"
"Mad Man Blues"
"Wednesday Evening Blues"
"Six Page Letter"
"Up And Down"
"Funky Mabel"
"Rockin' These Blues Away"
"Turn Over A New Leaf"
"Mean Mean World"
"Loving People"

07 October 2003

Cat Power is on Sigmatropic's new album "Sixteen Haiku And Other Stories" on track 11, "Haiku ten", and it's pretty good! There's something different and pleasant about it. Looks like whatever Mr. Gelb touches turns to gold.

Chan's on Band of Blacky Ranchette's "Still
Looking Good To Me" album.
Didn't listen to it, so I don't know how big is her part there.
Oh, and there's the reviews:
Americana UK on the same page there is Vic Chesnutt, Herman Dune, Guided By Voices and others
Pop Matters
Links I visit as often as possible or find somewhat meaningful:
Moonpix - yeah, I know the webmaster's kinda away, but it's still good just not up-to-date as I intent to be.
Where Rockets Find Planets, just because I never seem to give up and hay, if the changed the background just this week ans it's still a pic from Chan, there's still hope!
The Official uh, site, which I don't visit as often and if u took a few minutes to check here, u should know why
Mudstories, just cuz it's so classic and that's where Chan's paintings are still available on the net
Matador forums, which is pretty reliable and a pretty good source
What Would The Community Think? same reasons
these are links from the past couple of days:
Peta2 - I saw that pic on ebay once
Cat Power gallery on AHC
I created this so I can keep track of what I find out. Writting on paper is no longer working.
